Eerie images of bloodstained sheets and terrifying medical equipment from an Italian morgue abandoned after an earthquake.

An urban explorer has photographed the eerie site, which has been abandoned since the L’Aquila earthquake devastated parts of central Italy 13 years ago.

The remains of the San Salvator Morgue were captured by video journalist, Lost Ireland, whose harrowing photos reveal a terrifying past.

Pictures showed a pile of bloodstained sheets, human remains, rusty examination beds and discarded forensic utensils.

Lost Ireland has been exploring abandoned sites for five years, but the amateur photographer said the Italian morgue had a chilling atmosphere.

He said: “It was definitely strange, the morgue had a strange smell and it was pitch black, so we had to use torches.

“You start to think that you can hear all kinds of strange noises in this kind of environment, so you definitely get upset.

“However, this was the only one I ever saw so much biological waste left behind including bone, blood and fluid samples.”

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2009 destroyed the mortuary outside Rome, Italy.

The earthquake killed more than 300 people and displaced about 65,000 people in the Abruzzo region.

Lost Ireland said he hopes his photos capture a piece of lost history.

He said: “I would argue that my photographs are a form of capturing history because they will still be there after the buildings no longer exist.

“Most people love the photos and find them interesting and insightful, but there are also certainly those who are disgusted or sick, especially with funerary photos.

“There is almost a stigma or fear around morgues and I hope to change it.”
