UNHCR provides shelter to earthquake-affected villages in southern Afghanistan

UNHCR’s “Housing and Shelter” project for earthquake-affected villages in southern Afghanistan’s Khost and Paktika provinces is in its final stages.

UNHCR said in a tweet that the newly built, well-insulated homes equipped with steam heaters, wide windows and sturdy doors and solar energy will provide permanent shelter for about 7,000 people in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the long-neglected south-eastern region of Afghanistan. .

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), about US$14 million has been allocated to community construction efforts to construct some 2,300 earthquake-resistant homes in the southern provinces of Khost and Paktika that were destroyed by the deadly June 22 earthquake.

“This initiative shows UNHCR’s sustained solidarity and support for people affected by the disaster – in the coming months, 2,300 families will have new resilient homes ready for winterization,” said UNHCR Representative Leonard Zulu during an assessment mission in Barmal, Paktika Province.

Recently, UNHCR teams have been meeting with local communities, and have stepped up construction work for a so-called shelter initiative to finish winter homes that will soon be handed over to locals in Khost and Paktika, before the cold winter sets in.

Over the past years, natural disasters such as droughts, floods, landslides, and earthquakes have greatly affected villages across the country. Hundreds of people have lost their crops, their livestock, even their near and dear ones, and have faced displacement without any insurance to continue their normal lives.
