BNPB commends the volunteers who contributed to the Cianjur earthquake response

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has commended the volunteers who contributed to disaster response missions following the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Cianjur Province, West Java, in November.

“We express our deep gratitude to the volunteers, who are always there for every disaster response mission,” said BNPB Senior Trustee Lilik Kurniawan in Cianjur, West Java, according to the statement received here, Tuesday.

Kurniawan said the volunteers are the BNPB’s partners and informants, who provide reliable data on site, allowing the agency to visualize the most strategic action in responding to the information fed by the volunteers.

He noted that during the disaster response following the earthquake in Cianjur, the BNPB paid attention to and responded to the information provided by the volunteers.

The BNPB official encouraged all parties to evaluate each disaster response mission they undertook to ensure improvement in future missions.

Kurniawan opined that since most natural disasters occur with recurring characteristics, all parties should also study vulnerable areas to increase vigilance against disasters.

“Earthquake is a recurring event and it will certainly happen, but we have no idea when the catastrophe will strike,” Kurniwan noted.

According to the BNPB’s volunteer information website, Deskrelawanpb.bnpb.go.id, as of Monday (12 December) at 11 am local time, a total of 7,744 volunteers from 555 organizations are working in 15 sectors in the response to the Cianjur earthquake disaster.

BNPB had earlier distributed stimulus funds to 647 families whose homes were damaged in the earthquake in Nagrak village, Cianjur district.

The government has provided stimulus funds of 15 million rupees to households whose houses had minor damage, 30 million rupees to homes with moderate damage, and 60 million rupees to severely damaged homes.

“As directed by President Joko Widodo, the activated funds should be used for the construction of houses,” said BNPB President Lieutenant General Suharyanto while symbolically handing over the aid to the residents of Nagrak village as quoted from a statement on Friday (9 December).

He noted that house construction work should be carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), and residents are advised to build earthquake-resistant homes.
