Earthquakes hit the Indonesian island of Bali. No injuries

Denpasar, Indonesia (AFP) – A moderate-magnitude earthquake and two aftershocks rocked the Indonesian island of Bali on Tuesday, causing panic but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the 4.9-magnitude quake was centered 35 km north of Amlapura, in Bali’s Karangasem region. Its shallow depth of 9.6 kilometers (6 miles) may have caused people to run outside.

Many residents and tourists rushed from their homes and hotels towards higher ground, but the situation returned to normal after they received text messages stating that the earthquake was not likely to cause a tsunami.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago with a population of 270 million, is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines that arch the Pacific Ocean.

An earthquake of similar magnitude in the Karangasem Hills last year triggered landslides and isolated at least three villages, killing at least three people.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake on November 21 killed at least 331 people and injured nearly 600 in the city of Cianjur, West Java. This is the deadliest in Indonesia since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, killing about 4,340 people.

In 2004, a very strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, mostly in the Indonesian province of Aceh.
