Ridgecrest one year later: a look back at the 4 July earthquakes

A year ago, on the weekend of July 4th, Southern California was struck by two of the strongest earthquakes in state history.

Many believe that the worst damage occurred after its 6.4 strength, but the size of 7.1 followed. The epicenter was just miles away from Ridgecrest, 110 miles east of Bakersfield.

A resident of Ridgecrest, April Hamel, recalls, “The shock, the horror, the fear, not knowing whether we will do it, if it stops.”

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries to report.

Dionisio Mitchell, head of the Kern County Fire Department, Dionisio Mitchell, told a news conference: “Anytime we can go through an earthquake of 7.1 and not report a death, I would like to say that this is a blessing and a miracle.”

However, deep structural damage cut. There were several reports of house fires, and more than a thousand people were without electricity at one time. Dozens were displaced from their homes.

“We have at least five trailers cut from the foundations on the ground,” said a resident of Trousdale Estates Mobile Home Park.
