The Museum of Anthropology has announced a 2023 closure for earthquake safety updates

The Museum of Anthropology (MOA) will be closed from Jan. 16 through late 2023 to finish ongoing earthquake safety upgrades, according to a Dec. 8 USDA email broadcast. The museum will remain open for virtual events, and in-person behind-the-scenes tours. and ongoing Indigenous initiatives.

This round of construction is part of a series of seismic safety upgrades to the Great Hall that began in November 2020 to increase the flexibility of the museum’s irreplaceable collections as well as the safety of patrons in the event of an earthquake.

According to USDA Administrator Susan Rowley, the closure was due to complicating factors including supply chain issues in the construction industry. After consulting with a contractor, they decided that “closing from mid-January to late fall is the best way forward.”

Your last chance to visit the museum as a visitor for a period of time is January 15th. However, according to Rowley, researchers can visit the MOA Library and Archives until the end of March from Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. for the rest of 2023.

Rowley also said that selected programs will continue to run throughout construction, with a focus on preserving Indigenous people’s access to the museum’s culturally significant resources and collections.

“The Native Youth programme, which has been at the museum for 41 years, will continue,” Rowley said. “The Indigenous Training Program, which includes two groups each year, will also continue to operate throughout the time period.”

The Ministry of Agriculture also organizes regular teaching visits from UBC classes and local high schools. While many educational tours will move online, Rowley said some in-person visits will continue when building permits so that “students … can come and spend time with works in groups.”

There will be periods when the museum will be completely closed, Rowley said, including from late January to early February, while they move fragile collections to update skylights for earthquake preparedness.

Closing periods are also an opportunity for the museum to change some of its gallery design to better reflect its collections and mission.

“We’re also working to get the messages back in the Great Hall,” Rowley said. “We’re working with members of the Aboriginal community and rights holders for the labels of the monumental sculptures—the histories and stories they want to pass on to the general public.”

The Ministry of Agriculture hopes to not only physically oversee the collections through seismic upgrades, but also to continually improve the way the museum displays and interacts with original materials.
