Religious buildings were damaged by the earthquake that occurred in Mandalay and Sagang districts in central Myanmar on Thursday.

The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter east of Tada-U in Mandalay, according to the junta’s meteorology and hydrology department.

The Me Nu Oak-kyaung (Brick Monastery) was damaged, according to an official from the National Museum and Antiquities Department. The monastery was built for Nanmadaw Mi Nu, chief consort of King Pajidao, in 1822.

The department examined the Ava or Inwa Heritage Area, the imperial capital of the Burmese kingdoms from the 14th to the 19th centuries, for damage.

“There is not much damage in Inwa. Only the stucco reliefs are damaged in the pagoda and other buildings,” said one of the residents.

An earthquake in 2012 damaged many temples and pagodas in Ava.

Damages have been reported at Myatheindan Pagoda, built in 1816 by King Pajidao in Mingon.

Residents said that one of the giant lion statues had lost a leg. The two giant statues were built in the 1890s as guardians of Mingun Pahtodawgyi. The statues were badly damaged by the 1839 earthquake.

Religious buildings were damaged in the towns of Amarapura, Pyigyitagun and Chanayethazan in the Mandalay region.
