The death toll from the earthquake that struck Indonesia’s main island of Java last month jumped by the hundreds to 602, a local administration official said on Friday, after authorities verified unreported injuries across the worst-hit city.

A shallow earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the town of Cianjur in Indonesia’s most populous West Java province on November 21, with most of the victims killed by building collapses or landslides.

Adam, a spokesman for the local administration in Cianjur, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP the new number – up from a previously reported figure of 334 – was based on data collected from residents across the city.

He said that many people rushed to bury their relatives after the disaster without informing the authorities of their death.

“If someone died, the people of Cianjur would often bury him immediately. Because of the panic, those who died were buried immediately by their relatives without notifying the local health agency,” he said.

“It was revealed later that about 600 people were killed when the official count was made,” he added, citing the administration’s new number, which is 602.

The local rescue agency, known as BPBD, posted the new death toll on social media. Acting official Wawan Setiawan confirmed the new toll to AFP.

On Friday, the state-run Antara news agency quoted Cianjur district chief Herman Sohermann as saying the new death toll had reached 602.

– ‘Need to check’ –

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Abdul Mahari told AFP it was still committed to bringing the death toll down to 335 but was working to verify the new figure.

“Because they were buried immediately and their names were not reported, they were not included in the list of missing persons,” he said.

“The district chief said they already have the data, regardless we still need to verify it.”

To claim government assistance, he said, relatives must strike victims off their family register and obtain a death certificate from local authorities.

It was the deadliest earthquake in the archipelago country since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami killed more than 4,000 people on the island of Sulawesi.

Many were found buried under the rubble in the days following the earthquake, and only several successful rescues were reported, including one to free a six-year-old boy described as a “miraculous” by emergency workers.

Officials said the quake destroyed more than 62,000 homes and forced more than 73,000 people to flee to at least 325 shelters.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates collide.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake on the island of Sulawesi in January 2021 killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands.
