Railway Commission responds to the 5.4 earthquake

The Austin Railroad Commission activated staff Friday night in response to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake about ten miles north of Midland in Martin County and issued a statement saying it would take any actions necessary to protect public safety and the environment.

On Saturday, RRC inspectors were examining disposal activity at injection well sites near the earthquake, which occurred within the Gardendale Seismic Response Area (SRA).

In December 2021, the Community Rehabilitation Center ordered the indefinite suspension of all disposals of produced water at SRA’s deep injection wells. Staff will review permit requirements for other injection wells in the area as they prepare to respond to reduce the frequency and severity of earthquakes.

Agency personnel continue to closely monitor seismic data from the USGS, the TexNET seismic program and private operator monitoring stations.

RRC employees will continue their work to keep residents and the environment safe, according to the statement.

On Saturday, Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil and Gas Association (TXOGA), pledged to cooperate in a statement.

Industry operators continue to collaborate with the Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) in response to recent activity in the Gardendale Seismic Response Area (SRA). The USGS website on Saturday described another quake on Friday that was of 2.7 as well as a 3.3 quake that occurred shortly after Friday’s 5.4. Residents in Odessa reported feeling the 5.4 quake for a few minutes, and reports from as far away as Crane and Seminole indicate that some residents also felt the 5.4 quake.

Various reports first reported the quake at 5.3 but it was recorded at 5.4 on Saturday noon on the website. The large quake occurred at 5:35 p.m. The Midland Meteorological Service said it was the fourth-strongest quake ever recorded in Texas. There were no reports of injuries.
