Investigators in West Texas after the 5.4 earthquake

MIDLAND, Texas — The Texas Railroad Commission, which oversees the state’s oil and gas industry, has sent investigators to West Texas after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake near Midland.

According to a statement from the commission, “RRC inspectors will examine disposal activity at injection well sites near the earthquake, and will take any actions necessary to protect public safety and the environment.”

The Railways Commission earlier this month directed producers to reduce injection volumes in the wake of a 5.4-magnitude earthquake on November 16 in Menton, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) west of Midland.

The earthquake on Friday afternoon, about 315 miles (507 kilometers) west of Dallas, resulted in no injuries and only minor damage, including no visible damage to oil wells, said Justin Bunch, Emergency Management Coordinator for Midland County. and gas in the region.
