Thousands felt the East Bay earthquake

El Cerrito – An early morning earthquake hit El Cerrito on Saturday morning, rudely waking residents across the Bay Area and causing minor damage near the epicenter.

The magnitude 3.6 quake occurred at 3:39 a.m. and had its epicenter in the Hillside Natural Area near the Hayward Fault, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

It was the largest earthquake centered in Contra Costa County since November 2021, and it was also felt by thousands of people outside the county, including Fremont, San Francisco and Redwood City.

A Berkeley resident said the tremor caused some items to fall out of her kitchen cupboards. “We were asleep when the building started shaking and the windows started rattling,” Carrie Kahn said. “It just didn’t seem like it was going to stop. I was so relieved when I realized the power and internet were still working. Then I saw the mess in the kitchen in the morning. Spice jars had fallen out of the cupboard and they were all shattered.”

The earthquake was also a reminder to prepare for a bigger event. The USGS estimated in a 2015 study that the probability of an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater in the Hayward Fault, which runs roughly 74 miles along the western base of the densely populated East Bay Hills, in the next 30 years, was 14.3 percent in A study conducted in 2015.

The El Cerrito and Richmond Police Departments said no major damage had been reported as of Saturday morning. BART’s tracks were checked for damage and due to icy conditions early on, causing a delay of about 20 minutes.

By 9:30 a.m., more than 7,873 people had reported feeling the quake, said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the USGS.

“People will feel it differently depending on what side of the error they’re on because the Earth moves differently,” he said. “There are a lot of other variables as well, like the soil you’re sitting on and the type of building you’re in. But we usually don’t see significant damage and loss until the magnitudes get to around 5.5.”

Contra Costa County Sheriff John Gioia, whose district includes El Cerrito, said he didn’t get an alert on his phone, but the earthquake definitely woke him up.

“It felt a lot stronger than the 3.6 to me. I live a few miles from the epicenter on the Gulf Coast, and my house is in an area that was full about 60 years ago, which really shows what kind of soil you live on and affects how much the shaking feels like,” Joya said. “It felt stronger to me than the people who live near the epicenter who live on a more stable rock.”

Joya said an electronic newsletter will be sent to residents of the province with advice on how to prepare for future earthquakes. “I think this is a reminder that we live in earthquake country and a major event can happen at any time,” said Joya.

An earthquake of this magnitude is normal for a fault, said Keith Knudsen, a geologist and deputy director of the USGS Seismology Center, who lives in Albany.

“The fault moves in a way that we call creep, which means that the two sides are sliding in front of each other between large earthquakes,” he said. “Occasionally, as part of that creep, there is a large stuck spot and those spots can rupture, resulting in magnitude 3 earthquakes, and they usually happen in the same place.”

In order to prepare for a larger earthquake, Knudsen said, residents should read the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety on the California Earthquake Authority website, and make a plan for how to communicate with family members in the aftermath of an earthquake.

“Get an emergency kit. I have a garbage can in my backyard full of water and other things we might need for a few days. It’s also important to think about mitigation. Check the structures you and your family spend time in. Make sure those buildings will protect you.”
