6.4-magnitude earthquake causes injuries, damage in Northern California coast – Daily Redlands Facts

A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the northern California coast near Eureka Tuesday morning, the US Geological Survey reported, causing structural damage, power outages and some injuries.

The quake occurred at around 2:34 a.m. on Tuesday, and the epicenter was reported to be off the coast of Humboldt County, California.

“Due to a major earthquake, widespread damage was reported to roads and homes throughout Humboldt County,” the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office stated in a tweet.

Besides Eureka, the cities of Ferndale and Fortuna are nearby, based on the epicenter reported by the USGS. The famous Humboldt Redwoods State Park is also in the vicinity.

“More than 70,000 customers without power as of 5:45 a.m.,” the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services said on its Facebook page.

The county agency wasn’t sure when power would be fully restored.

“Two injuries have been confirmed,” emergency services officials said.

Residents and journalists in the area were reporting gas leaks scattered throughout the area, and property damage ranging from collapsed structures in rural areas to severed shelving and other home fixtures.

The county office of emergency services stated “widespread damage has been reported to roads and homes, particularly in the Eel River Valley.”

A swarm of aftershocks that included a magnitude 4.6 shaker rocked the town of Rio Del several miles off the coast through Humboldt County Tuesday morning.

At least 13 aftershocks were reported by the USGS within 45 minutes after the initial 6.4 earthquake. Aftershocks were primarily inland east of the original earthquake.

The ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system—which is subscribed to by the USGS and covers the West Coast—set off smartphone beeps and woke thousands of Bay Area residents to notify them of the quake. The local alert also warned that they might feel some shaking although this did not seem to materialize.

The risk of a tsunami has been ruled out by the National Weather Service.

“Power is out of county,” the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said at 3:13 a.m. in a post on its Twitter page.
