Ali Daei’s pro-protest family has been banned from leaving Iran

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A former prominent footballer in Iran who has expressed support for anti-government protests said his wife and daughter were prevented from leaving the country on Monday after their plane made an unexpected stop on their way to Dubai.

Ali Daei, whose own passport was briefly confiscated after returning to the country earlier this year, said his wife and daughter left the capital, Tehran, legally before the trip made an abrupt halt on Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, where they were. Interrogated by the authorities.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency, which is believed to be close to the Revolutionary Guards, said the travel ban was imposed on Daei’s wife earlier this month over her support for the protests. She said she tried to bypass the ban illegally, without elaborating, and that her final destination was the United States. The reports did not mention his wife or daughter, who are non-public figures.

Daei is one of many Iranian celebrities who have come out in support of the protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mohsa Amini in September. The Kurdish woman died after being arrested by Iran’s morality police in Tehran for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code.

The protests quickly spread across the country and escalated into calls for the overthrow of the clerical rule established after the 1979 revolution, making it one of the biggest challenges facing clerical rule in more than four decades.

At least 507 protesters have been killed and more than 18,500 people arrested, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that closely monitored the unrest. The Iranian authorities have not published figures for those killed or arrested.

Before his passport was confiscated, Daei, a top international scorer and former captain of Iran’s national team, urged the government on social media to “solve the problems of the Iranian people instead of using repression, violence and arrests.” He later said it was returned to him.

The leaderless protesters, mobilizing under the slogan “Women, Life, Freedom,” say they are tired of decades of social and political oppression by a religious establishment they see as corrupt and out of sight. Iranian authorities have blamed the unrest on foreign adversaries such as the United States and Israel.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement on Sunday that it had arrested seven individuals in the southeastern city of Kerman with “direct links” to Britain who took part in the protests. She said that some members of the network hold dual citizenship, without going into details.
