TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said on Tuesday (Dec. 27) that repairs on the last stretch of railway line in Hualien County on the east coast were completed 100 days after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit neighboring Taitung County. .

The earthquake came as part of a series of dozens of tremors that hit the region, damaging buildings and bridges, leaving one dead and more than 100 injured. Damage to railways and stations along the east coast was gradually repaired while bus services replaced trains.

However, a final section, between the towns of Yuli and Foli, has not yet been fully restored due to the extensive work required on two bridges and at Dongli station, where the roof over the platforms collapsed during the earthquake, Liberty Times reported.

Transportation Minister Wang Kuocai (王國材) said during a visit to the region on Tuesday that regular train services will resume Wednesday (December 28), 20 days earlier than initially expected. The opening of the track between Yuli and Foli came just in time for the three-day New Year holidays, when tourists and locals alike need to travel by train along the east coast to get home from the north.

The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) implemented new technologies to complete repairs sooner than expected, while Dongli Small Station saw its platform raised by 20cm to 110cm to give passengers safer access to trains. The report stated that the speed on the damaged bridges will remain limited to 80 km/h at first, allowing the TRA to monitor the durability of repair work.
