Thanks to a new national infrastructure law, the Golden Gate Bridge is set to receive $400 million to strengthen transit against earthquakes such as the Great Earthquake, outgoing Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said in Thursday’s announcement.

The money to bolster the Bay Area’s claim to fame comes from the Federal Highway Administration, which has found the bridge to be in “fair” condition, which will likely deteriorate to “poor” in the next three years without additional work.

The announcement said the $400 million in improvements was vital to the bridge’s structural integrity in the face of earthquakes.

While parts of the bridge connecting the structure to the road were modernized in 2013, the main suspension of the bridge still needs to be updated if it is to withstand more earthquakes.
