A strong 5.4 aftershock wakes up Northern Californians on New Year’s Day

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake jolted Northern California residents awake on New Year’s Day. The US Geological Service says the quake that occurred 9 miles southeast of Rio Del, California at 8:35 a.m. was an aftershock of the Dec. 20 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4.

More than 1,400 people reported feeling devastated. The USGS estimates that about 3,000 people in the area would have experienced a “strong” shaking, which generally would have a 1 in 3 chance of causing at least $1 million in damages. The USGS estimates that about 1,900 people have experienced moderate shaking.

So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

PowerOutage.us reported that 1,300 homes and businesses lost power immediately after the quake. This represents 1.3% of the county.

The most damage is expected within the light green circle.

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake in December killed two people and injured 11 when it struck near Ferndale, California at 2:34 a.m. More than 70,000 customers lost electricity near the epicenter. Ferndale is only about 20 miles from Rio Del.

The magnitude 5.4 is the largest aftershock USGS scientists expected to see from the magnitude 6.4 quake.

“Typically, the largest aftershocks we see from an earthquake are smaller by about one order of magnitude,” explained a USGS scientist. “So for 6.4, we would expect to see probably up to 5.4.”

In the past week, the region witnessed eight aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 or more. The USGS said this was a “very small number”.

Just five minutes after the December 20 earthquake, the USGS recorded more than 36 aftershocks. Scientists told FOX Weather that up to 68 aftershocks are likely through Dec. 27

“We expect the aftershocks to continue for a few weeks,” he said. “As time passes and the aftershocks subside, we see fewer aftershocks and decrease in size as well.”

“The larger the magnitude, the more persistent aftershocks,” he continued.

The 6.4 magnitude quake was not expected to cause an abundance of aftershocks because its epicenter was 11 miles deep. He said California earthquakes are usually 3 to 6 miles deep. Shallow earthquakes generally produce more aftershocks.

Humboldt County still has a local help center open for victims of the December 20 earthquake. The Red Cross expected their overnight shelter to be closed on Sunday. They have not reviewed this closure at this time.
