One of the men told Newshub he was woken up around 5:40 a.m. after his headboard started banging against the wall and the bed started swaying from “side to side.”

“I have to say I wasn’t sure what was going on because I slept so well — I didn’t even think about going to the doorway or falling over and covering and grabbing. It definitely got me thinking about securing bulky items, as well as preparing a survival bag.”

A Hamilton resident also told Newshub that he was awakened by the quake around 5:40 a.m., with the rumbling making “strange noises” throughout his home.

“I thought maybe someone was in the house,” he said, “almost like someone knocked on a wall, as the glasses sounded like rattling.”

After checking his security cameras and identifying an intruder who wasn’t responsible for the “crackle,” the man said he checked GeoNet and found his home had been shaken by the earthquake.
