The number of earthquakes near Te Aroha awakens people in the Upper North

A number of earthquakes near Te Aroha woke people from their sleep this morning across the top of the North Island.

GeoNet reported that three earthquakes occurred near the city from around 5.39am this morning.

The first quake – with a magnitude of 5.1 and described as strong – occurred at 5.39 am 5km south of Te Aroha at a depth of 7km.

The second earthquake – measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale and described as weak – struck a few minutes later at 5.47 am 5 km south of Te Aroha at a depth of 5 km.

The third earthquake – with a magnitude of 2.7 and described as weak – occurred at 5.51 am 5 km southwest of Te Aroha at a depth of 5 km.

More than 20,000 people felt the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.1, while the first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 2.7, was felt by more than 8,000 people.

More than 4,000 people felt the second earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7.

People in the upper North Island have responded to GeoNet’s tweets about the earthquakes, saying it woke them up in places like Hamilton, Rotorua, Morrisville, Te Uamatu, Turanga and even as far north as Auckland.

The 5.1-magnitude quake was described by some as “long and powerful” and someone in Tauranga described it as “dangerous shaking and rolling”.

Others told 1News that the earthquake they felt in Tauranga was “scary” as it rattled windows and doors and caused their homes to shake.

Six more earthquakes have been reported after this morning’s wave of tremors.

The strongest earthquakes since around 6am were with a magnitude of 3.9 at 11.21am and a magnitude of 3.0 at 11.39am, both of which were 5km south of Te Aroha and at a depth of 5km.

GeoNet said the quakes were likely on the same fault system and added that the area was last hit by a strong earthquake in 1972 – the 4.9-magnitude Te Aroha earthquake.
