Gnowangerup earthquake: 4.5 magnitude earthquake hits a large southern town and earthquake was felt in Perth

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake shook the major southern city of Gnoangrup, and tremors were felt as far away as Perth.

Geoscience Australia confirmed that the quake occurred at around 1.12pm on Thursday at a depth of about 5km.

Tremors were felt throughout the Great South, the Wheatbelt, and in the southwest and Perth metropolitan area.

Geoscience Australia chief seismologist Trevor Allen said nearly 100 people had reported feeling the ground shake.

Mr Allen said it was the largest earthquake to occur in the area since a magnitude 4.8 event near Katanning in 2007.

He said that there had been reports of damage to some buildings in the area, but stressed that the information had not been verified yet.

The seismologist said the area usually experiences small earthquakes — about 10 quakes of magnitude 2 or larger each year.

He agreed that Thursday’s event was significant, saying it could have shaken the ground “about 300 times stronger than a magnitude 2 earthquake.”

“It is likely that we will record aftershocks from today’s event,” Allen said.

“At this point, we haven’t recorded any aftershocks, but a common feature of shallow earthquakes is that they generate long aftershock chains that can last for a few months.”

Roslyn Thompson, who lives on a farm in Ongerup, about 55 kilometers from Gnowangerup, said she was sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea when she heard a loud bang.

“I was thinking the heavy machinery has passed because we are still harvesting,” she said.

‘It got louder when I heard it approaching – almost like a great gust of wind coming in. Then the windows rattled.

“I’m still not sure if it was an earthquake at the time, but when the house moved in I knew. I’ve been waiting for some plaster to fall off, we’re in an old house, but the cracks look the same.”

Paul Freeman was working at the Elders in Borden when he also heard what he thought was a truck driving by.

“I felt a little growling,” he said, “and it felt like a truck was driving by the shed, because you could hear it coming.”

And then the whole shed gave a kind of twitch and it was just kind of. ‘I thought what the hell is this?'”

Mr. Freeman said this was the first “real, good earthquake” he had felt in the area.
