Kilauea begins to erupt again at Halemaumau Crater after a hiatus of about a month

HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) — Kilauea volcano has begun erupting again after a nearly month-long hiatus in activity, USGS scientists say.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory says the eruption began at 4:30 p.m. Thursday after a fissure opened and scientists detected a glow inside the Haleamaumau crater in Kilauea’s summit caldera.

Officials added that the activity is entirely confined within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and does not pose a threat to any residential communities.

Scientists have raised the volcano’s alert level to Warning and its flight color code to red.

Webcam images showed cracks at the base of the crater that produce lava flows on the surface.

Early Thursday, the USGS said, there were more earthquakes and changes in ground deformation patterns at the summit. These were all signs that magma was moving beneath the surface.

Officials said they will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The most recent eruption of Kilauea volcano – which began on September 29, 2021 – paused on December 9, 2022, bringing the alert level down to yellow. It was just one day before the end of the Mauna Loa eruption.

Officials said Kilauea Volcano’s latest eruption produced more than 29 billion gallons of lava into Halemaumau Crater at the summit — raising the floor nearly 470 feet.
