The struggle for “impurity” | It took an earthquake to shake my thoughts – Times-Standard

Yes, I’m still alive.

While staying at my “residence” my wife and I finally got caught with COVID. For me, it was a cold head. My wife was not so lucky. I wasn’t expecting to catch her, because I was sedated, triple-boosted, and (relatively) careful. I was convinced I would remain a “COVID virgin” through the pandemic. Alas, as my grandmother used to say, “Man plans, God laughs.” Anyway, we’re both healthy again, and—speaking for myself—this version of me comes with less arrogance.

Although that was annoying, that wasn’t the reason I darkened. Instead, I had already decided to do something I’d never done before… take a month off! This is a big step, being a recovery from work, but on the advice of Inner Spirit (and some family and friends), I chose to explore the mysterious and deceptive concept of R&D.

Of course, speaking of God’s laughter, during our downtime we experienced the most severe earthquake I’ve ever experienced – and I’ve been through a lot. On the Richter scale, it was “only” 6.4. I’m a veteran of many earthquakes over 7 years, but this one sounded like a scene from the 70’s movie, “The Exorcist” with Linda Blair’s bed tossing wildly around her room. I felt like I was riding a bull at a rodeo. According to a local seismologist, it was the third deadliest earthquake in California history because in addition to the Richter rating; There is also “acceleration”. To be clear, if you’re driving from zero to 60 and it takes an hour to reach top speed, you won’t notice that you’re accelerating. However, if you do it in 30 seconds, you will definitely feel it. This was the case in this latest earthquake. Fill a full wallop in just 18 seconds.

Our house survived. Many of our tapestries do not. My desk was the hardest hit, with many memorabilia and other items destroyed. It took me days to get it all off the floor, but once I did, I realized what, “I don’t need a lot of this stuff I surround myself with” and I tossed it or donated it a lot.

At first, I experienced pangs of nostalgia when broken knick-knacks and smashed picture frames were thrown in the trash. After all, I collected these keepsakes as a reminder of the good times. Seeing them in a broken heap at the bottom of the trash stirred many emotions. But, you know how it is, once you start, you keep going. So, after tossing my broken mermaid figurine, glassware, and smashed glass candlesticks, I started rummaging around my desk to see what else could be thrown away.

I still get travel receipts from the last century (really). There have been decades of presentations I’ve given at oughts, reviews of speeches from 2012 and name badges hung from conferences I’ve attended from Montana to Michigan. After moving through these things, I relieve myself from my desk lamp, books I’ll never read again, and countless CDs and DVDs—plus the plastic cupboard in which they’re stored.

The pangs of guilt that seized me at first were replaced by intense excitement as my office began to seem like a place of honor rather than embarrassment. My shelves are no longer cluttered with dust collectors, and my desk is no longer hidden by piles of papers.

A professional organizer explained to me that to tackle clutter, let a standard-sized piece of paper float out of your hand and land on the pile. the obligation to handle everything under this sheet; This is it. Repeat once a day. So, to that end, I keep 30 to 60 minutes a day and focus on a small portion of my desk, clearing out, replacing, or recycling what’s in there. I’m so pleased with the way things are (I’m still working on it) that I don’t even need to blur the background in Zoom anymore – and let me tell you, that’s an achievement.

In the tradition of the Buddhist faith, one is reminded that much suffering is caused by holding onto that which is impermanent, which is, in fact, everything. When times are good, it’s natural for human nature to never want it to end, and we do that by trying to hang on to it. Yes, it’s hard to admit that part of my life is over; It caused me to face my own annihilation. However, when I let go of what was, I am open to what will be. I move from sadness and loss of what has gone to excitement and anticipation of what lies ahead.

Ironically, it took an earthquake to shake my thoughts.
