A 4.1-magnitude earthquake hits Pangandaran, West Java

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – A 4.1-magnitude earthquake hit Pangandaran district in West Java province on Sunday at 00:10 am local time but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to infrastructure.

The epicenter was located 125 kilometers southwest of Pangandran at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Pangandran has been repeatedly hit by tremors due to earthquakes over the past few years.

On October 25, 2020, for example, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook the southwest of the region and damaged a house in Kertaharja Hamlet, Ciamis Province, West Java.

Many residents felt a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in several parts of the provinces of West Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta.

The areas of Pangandran district were hit by a deadly earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on July 17, 2006.

The earthquake reportedly triggered a five-meter high tsunami that paralyzed many homes in coastal areas and killed at least 668 people.

The earthquake reportedly affected 169 villages, damaged 56,548 homes, and claimed the lives of 600 residents.

The disaster, which also affected certain coastal areas in countries, such as Thailand, Sri Lanka and India, killed about 230,000 people.
