Magnitude 7.2 earthquake strikes Vanuatu, triggering a tsunami warning

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu on Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported, prompting a tsunami warning that was withdrawn hours later.

The agency said the quake had its epicenter 23 km from Port Ulri and struck at a depth of 27 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami threat it issued for the nearby coast of Vanuatu had passed. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

“There is no risk of a tsunami for New Zealand after the M7.2 Vanuatu earthquake,” New Zealand Civil Defense wrote on Facebook. “Based on the current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have triggered a tsunami that would pose a threat to New Zealand.”

Vanuatu is home to about 280,000 people and is prone to natural disasters, with six active volcanoes as well as regular typhoons and earthquakes. It sits on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanoes are common.
