A tsunami warning after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck an island nation in the Pacific Ocean

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the Vanuatu archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.

The epicenter was 15 miles from Port Olry and struck at a depth of 17 miles on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for coasts located 186 miles from the epicenter.

She added that “tsunamis of up to 0.3 to 1 meter above the tide level are possible in some of the coasts of Vanuatu.”

The warning was withdrawn hours later, with authorities saying the threat had passed. There have been no reports of damages or losses so far.

The French Embassy in Vanuatu advised people to stay away from the coast.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defense said in a statement on social media: “There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M7.2 Vanuatu earthquake.

“Based on the current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have triggered a tsunami that would pose a threat to New Zealand.”

Al Jazeera reported that some Vanuatu residents fled to higher ground after the warning was first issued.

The Pacific island has a population of about 280,000 people and is prone to natural disasters, with six active volcanoes and regular hurricanes and earthquakes.

It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanoes are frequent.

The region is home to more than 450 volcanoes, including three of the four most active volcanoes in the world – Mount St. Helens in the United States, Mount Fuji in Japan, and Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines.

The Ring of Fire provides the background for 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and 80 percent of the largest earthquakes.

In November, the neighboring Solomon Islands was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Likewise, there were no reports of serious injuries or damage.

At the time, coastal areas of neighboring Papua New Guinea were placed on alert for tsunamis of up to 30 cm (12 in) in height.
