3.7 magnitude earthquake hits Ganghwa

SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) — An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck western Ganghwa Province early Monday morning, the first earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 to hit South Korea this year, but no damage was reported, According to the state meteorological agency.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said the quake occurred at 1:28 a.m. with its epicenter in waters 25 km west of Ganghwa, with a depth of 19 km.

The earthquake was earlier estimated at 4.0 on the Richter scale but it was later revised downward.

The seismic intensity of Monday’s quake, which measures the intensity of ground shaking at a specific location, reached level 4 in Incheon and level 3 in Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province.

In the 12-level intensity scale used by South Korea, level 4 is the level at which many people feel shaky indoors, people wake up at night, or windows or dishes become wobbly.

By 2 am, a total of 30 earthquake-related reports had been submitted to the Incheon fire authorities, but no damages were reported.

Monday’s quake was the first with a magnitude of 3.0 to hit South Korea this year. An earthquake of similar magnitude was last reported in Juesan County, 110 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Oct. 29 with a magnitude of 4.1.
