A strong deep-sea earthquake destroyed village buildings in eastern Indonesia early Tuesday morning, and its strong tremor was widely felt in northern Australia.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning after the 7.6-magnitude quake was lifted three hours later.

“Based on four tide gauge observations around the epicenter, no significant anomalies or changes in sea level were shown,” said agency chief Dwikorita Karnawati.

Earthquakes were felt in several regions, including the provinces of Papua and East Nusa Tenggara.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has received visual reports of damage to homes and community buildings in Watuwe village in southwest Maluku.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 105 kilometers (65 miles), near the northern tip of Australia.

Deeper earthquakes tend to cause less surface damage than shallow shaking but are felt on a larger scale.

More than 1,000 people in northern Australia, including the city of Darwin, reported feeling the quake to Geoscience Australia. The Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not pose a threat of a tsunami on the mainland or any islands or territories.

Australian singer Vasey wrote on Twitter that it was the longest earthquake she had ever felt.

“We ran out of the house in the middle of the night, I’ve never had an earthquake this long and I felt so powerful. It was kind of scary,” Vasey wrote. “He woke us up in the middle of the night.”
