2022 Oklahoma earthquake lowest number in cap in a decade – 102.3 KRMG

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Oklahoma is no stranger to small earthquakes. Small fault lines baffle the state and are often the focal points for tremors, most of which we don’t feel. The past decade has brought us a huge surge in those earthquakes, many of which we have felt. Even a few of the largest earthquakes have caused some damage in parts of the state.

Last year brought us 78 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater. This was the lowest number of such earthquakes since 2009 when only 33 earthquakes of magnitude or greater were detected. There has been a gradual decrease in the number of such earthquakes since 2019. Most of the recent earthquakes occurred in the north-central, central and southeastern parts of the state.

The strongest earthquake last year occurred near Medford, Oklahoma, in the northern part of the state, with a magnitude of 4.5. Recent years have seen earthquakes of similar magnitude in different parts of the state. The largest earthquake measured in 2016 occurred near Pawnee, Oklahoma with a magnitude of 5.8. Since 2016, our state has not experienced an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or greater.

So far in 2023—as of January 10—there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher.
