An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale destroyed more than 100 homes in Indonesia

More than 100 homes and other buildings have been destroyed after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Maluku province in eastern Indonesia, an official and a meteorological agency said.

Most of the damage occurred in Kipulawan-Tanimbar district, the hardest-hit district, where 92 houses, an office building and a school building were damaged by the quakes, according to Abdul Mahari, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency.

The earthquake also destroyed 32 homes and two educational facilities in Maluku Barat Daya district, the spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.

But Mahari said the damage did not force the residents of the districts to flee their homes, as only one person was injured.

He added that a coordination meeting was held to prepare emergency relief efforts, including preparation for the distribution of aid such as rice, blankets, tents, medicines, and others.

According to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the quake occurred at 12:47 am local time, with its epicenter 148 kilometers northwest of Kepulawan-Tanimbar District and at a depth of 131 kilometers below the sea floor.

The Meteorological Agency indicated that three aftershocks of weak to moderate levels followed the main shock. The agency issued a tsunami warning for the province and the neighboring province of Southeast Sulawesi. No tsunami happened.
