USGS announces more than 400 small earthquakes in 2022 | Environment

The USGS recorded 425 aftershocks in the Stanley area in 2022, more than 100 of those with magnitudes greater than 2.5.

Last year’s strongest aftershock measured 3.8 on the Richter scale and occurred on December 21 at 10:42 a.m., with its epicenter near Dutch Lake northwest of Stanley. People felt the quake “lightly” in Boise, Le Mans, Stanley, and Ellis — about 70 miles in both directions, according to the USGS Community Intensity Map.

The second most powerful earthquake of 2022 had a magnitude of 3.6 and occurred on November 6 at 9:14 p.m. along State Highway 21, just north of Camp Thatcher. The USGS reported that it was felt lightly in Meridian, Boise, and Stanley.

The agency recorded 21 additional tremors between magnitudes 3 and 4 in 2022, most of them along the turn in the state’s Interstate 21 between Stanley and Le Mans.

Earthquakes in the Stanley area will be considered aftershocks until the quake frequency around the original epicenter of magnitude 6.5 returns to a “background level” before 2020, according to Paul Earl, a seismologist and operations director for the USGS National Earthquake Information Center.
