Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off the west coast of Sumatra, and there is no tsunami warning

JAKARTA: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Monday (January 16), the US Geological Survey reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 48 km southeast of the city of Singkil in Aceh province, at a depth of 37 km.

It happened around 6:30 am local time (2230 GMT), and the USGS revised it from its initial measurement at 6.0 degrees with a depth of 48 km.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also put it at 6.2 and said there was no threat of a tsunami, while the country’s disaster agency said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

“The earthquake caused panic. It was felt between 3 and 10 seconds by people in four districts in Aceh and North Sumatra province,” Abdul Mahari, a spokesman for the agency’s Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a statement.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates collide.

On November 21, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the densely populated West Java province on the main island of Java, killing 602 people.

Most of the victims died as a result of collapsed buildings or landslides.

One of the deadliest earthquakes occurred on the island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004, triggering a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that claimed more than 230,000 lives including victims as far away as Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
