Major earthquake hits Albania, no casualties reported – EURACTIV.com

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Albania on Sunday night, 10 kilometers from the town of Klos and 46 kilometers from the capital, Tirana, leaving residents traumatized as memories linger of the deadly 2019 earthquake that killed 51 people.

The quake struck the rural and mountainous region in the northeast of the country at 10:37 p.m. Witnesses described it as low and boisterous, yet it was felt throughout Albania, as well as Greece, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

The government confirmed that no injuries or damage to buildings were reported, but this did not prevent Tirana residents from taking refuge in squares and open areas. Cars and people on foot headed to different open areas of the city, looking for safety in case of another, larger shock.

While aftershocks were recorded, the rest of the night passed without occurrence.

On November 26, 2019, Albania was hit by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake near Durres, 40 kilometers from the capital. It caused many buildings to collapse instantly, as well as billions in damage. Some 51 people have been killed, thousands displaced, and thousands more have seen their homes destroyed or require demolition.

The European Union, European countries and third countries responded by donating more than 1 billion euros to Albania to rebuild homes, schools and hospitals, while millions more were donated as aid. The earthquake also saw one of the largest civil society movements in the country’s history as thousands of volunteers worked to collect and distribute aid to those in need.
