M 6.2 earthquake hits Aceh and North Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported in the early morning of January 16 a moderate-intensity earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Aceh and northern Sumatra.

The epicenter was detected at 05:30 West Indonesia Time (WIB) in the southeast off the coast of Aceh Singkil Regency and at a depth (below the epicenter) of 23 kilometers.

Gunung Setuli, Nias, in North Sumatra felt most of the impacts in IV on the MMI scale, while other areas such as Subulussalam, Aceh Singkil and South Aceh felt the earthquake in III-IV on the MMI scale. Other regions such as Sidempuan in northern Sumatra felt the least effects of the earthquake.
