An earthquake kills 70 people in Iran – newspaper

TEHRAN – More than 70 people were injured on Wednesday when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Iran, near the border with Turkey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred near the city of Khoy in West Azerbaijan province at 1:38 pm (1008 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 km.

The Tehran University Seismological Center said the quake had a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 12 km.

State television, citing district officials, said “at least 70 people were injured” while trying to escape to safety, and more than 300 homes in 15 villages were damaged.

Iran sits on the boundaries of several major tectonic plates and experiences frequent seismic activity.

In February 2020, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that shook the western upper village of Habash killed nine people at the border in Turkey.

The deadliest earthquake in Iran was the 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1990 that killed 40,000 people in the north of the country, injured 300,000 and left half a million homeless.
