No damage in a 7-magnitude earthquake off Davao Occidental

Davao Oriental, Philippines – A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, January 18, prompting residents of Sarangani Township in Davao West Province and Balut Island to flee their homes and workplaces for safety.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the epicenter of the earthquake was located off the coast of the town of Sarangani, at a depth of 64 kilometers from the sea floor.

After the initial shock, the Davao Region Civil Defense Office (OCD) conducted a rapid assessment of the affected areas to determine if there were any reports of damage or injuries.

No damage or injuries were reported, and residents were able to return to their usual routines shortly after the event, according to Mark Sironay, chief of operations for OCD in the Davao Region.

The earthquake was felt in Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Sarangani province.

Although there was no damage, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of living in an area prone to seismic activity.
