A 3.7-magnitude earthquake shakes parts of the Gulf region

A 3.7-magnitude earthquake gently shook South Bay Monday morning, the US Geological Survey said, waking some from sleep.

A 3.7-magnitude earthquake lightly jolted parts of the San Francisco Bay Area Monday morning, the US Geological Survey said.

Some residents were shaken from their sleep when the quake struck at 5:58 a.m. at a depth of 3.6 miles near San Martin, a small community in Santa Clara County, according to the USGS. The epicenter was about 7.7 miles northeast of Gilroy, 7.7 miles southeast of Morgan Hill and 26 miles southeast of San Jose.

Weak shaking was felt across the Santa Clara Valley, as far north as the San Francisco Peninsula, as far south as Monterey County and as far east as East Bay, according to the USGS. There are 202 people who reported feeling the earthquake through the Felt Report by the USGS.

The earthquake hit the Calaveras Fault, which last caused a major earthquake in October 2007, with a magnitude of 5.4 alum rocks.
