One person was killed and several homes destroyed by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in western Nepal

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal on Tuesday, killing one person and damaging several homes in the area, officials said.

Luk Bijaya Adhikari, Head of the Seismological Measurement and Research Centre, said the quake, which had its epicenter in Mela district of Bagura district of Sudurpachem district, hit the area at 2:43 pm local time.

Police said a 35-year-old woman was killed in the rural town of Gomul-2 when a rock fell on her while she was cutting grass in the nearby forest.

The district police chief said the quake damaged a number of houses in Pagura and Pajang districts.

Two houses were destroyed in Ward No. 7 and two others in Ward No. 9 in Padimalika municipality in Bagura district, which is 450 km west of Kathmandu. Police said cracks in a temple in the municipality were also cracked.

The landslide caused by the quake killed more than 40 sheep, police said, adding that one person was injured in the accident.

Monica Dahal, head of the National Seismological and Research Centre, said the 5.9-magnitude quake was felt in wider areas in western Nepal. It was also felt by some neighboring regions of India.

Western Nepal is frequently hit by mild to moderate earthquakes.

In December 2022, three tremors rocked western Nepal in quick succession.

In April 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 others. More than 800,000 homes and school buildings were also destroyed.
