An earthquake in Nepal has killed at least one person and sent tremors all the way to New Delhi

KATHMANDU: At least one person died and more than two dozen homes were damaged in a remote Nepali district after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Himalayan country on Tuesday (January 24), with the tremor being felt even in India’s new capital, officials said. Delhi.

A district official told Reuters that army and police teams rushed to the affected area in the western Bagura district, while local media showed pictures of volunteers moving rubble in search of survivors.

Deb Bahadur Rakkaya, a Gomul village official, said a woman who climbed a hill to gather fodder was crushed to death by a falling stone loosened by the earthquake.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 25 km, about 63 km northwest of Nepal’s Jumla district, more than 300 km from the capital, Kathmandu.

“It was a big earthquake. There were people gathered in the streets. There was terror for some time,” said Nain Rawal, an official in Bagora district.

The houses that were destroyed or cracks created in the villages were mostly built of mud and stone, said Pushkar Khadka, another district official, adding that more details were still to be received from rescue teams.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said earlier that the quake had a magnitude of 5.4.

Social media users in India said they felt strong tremors that shook ceiling fans and other fixtures.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal in 2015.
