4.2 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake followed by a strong aftershock struck Southern California early Wednesday morning, waking up thousands of people.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck at 2 a.m. and was centered in the sea 16 km south of Malibu Beach and west of Los Angeles at a depth of 14 km, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake was followed by a 3.5-magnitude aftershock at 2:03 AM and progressively weaker aftershocks at 2:22 AM and 2:38 AM.

The LAFD said the quake prompted the Los Angeles Fire Department to go into earthquake mode, which involved a strategic survey of all “major areas of concern.”

“Your LAFD has completed a strategic survey of 470 square miles of Los Angeles following the 4.2M earthquake near Malibu. LAFD announced at 2:45 a.m.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has not issued a tsunami warning.
