It has been 323 years since the last earthquake of the Cascadia subduction zone. How ready are you for the “Big One?”

It is the 323rd anniversary of the last earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone. We spend a great deal of time thinking about the “Big One” (and “Really Big One”) of the Pacific Northwest.

Our region is full of beautiful but haunting reminders of past earthquakes, like the stunning ghost forests on the Oregon coast. But, despite the beauty of these landmarks, they are a reminder that our region is prone to large earthquakes and accompanying tsunamis.

Ancient Sitka fir trees emerge from the shore during low tide in Neskowen on the Oregon coast. The so-called ‘Ghost Forest’ is believed to have been buried during a massive earthquake 2,000 years ago, unearthed by storms in the late 1990s. Today, the trees are visible at low tide. Here’s what Oregon’s Office of Emergency Management had to say about the Cascadia subduction zone:

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a 600-mile-long rift that stretches from northern California through British Columbia and is located about 70-100 miles off the coast of the Pacific Ocean. There have been 43 earthquakes in the last 10,000 years caused by this fault. The last earthquake that occurred in this fault was on January 26, 1700, with a magnitude of 9.0.

We know the exact history of the last “Big One” through oral histories kept by local indigenous groups, but also through historical records from as far away as Japan. The earthquake of 1700 caused a large tsunami on the coast of Japan.

The average length of time between subduction zone earthquakes off the coast of Oregon is 246 years. The OEM says that “there is a 37 percent chance of a magnitude 7.1+ massive earthquake occurring in this fault zone in the next 50 years.”

This graph shows the frequency of major earthquakes along the Cascadia subduction zone over the past 10,000 years.

With those big earthquakes, tsunamis also come. If you live on the coast or re-established, make sure you know where the evacuation routes are.

A study commissioned by the Oregon State Health Authority found that nearly 20,000 people may have died in an earthquake-triggered tsunami along the Cascadia subduction zone.

OEM advice for Oregonians planning for emergencies is: “Be on the lookout. Have a plan. Make a kit.”

Here are some simple steps you can take to do this:

stay informed.

Sign up for emergency notifications via OR-Alert, and sign up for text message alerts from “federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial public alert authorities” at Ready.gov.

Living in earthquake country: A step-by-step guide to preparing for the big event

Make your plan.

Create an emergency plan with everyone in your home. You should agree on where to meet and how to communicate in the event of a disaster, and exercise your plan once in a while.

Pack an emergency kit – and keep it up to date.

In addition to your home emergency kit, keep a bag ready to go in case you have to evacuate. Don’t forget to pack essentials for your pets.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
