Premier Chris Hepkins has confirmed that there have been three deaths linked to the extreme weather event in Auckland in the past 24 hours. There is also at least one person missing.

Speaking at a news conference in Auckland, Hipkins said the priority is making sure Aucklanders are safe, housed and have access to all emergency services.

“MetService has confirmed that yesterday was the wettest day in Auckland on record,” Hipkins said. “We want to make sure that the infrastructure in Auckland is back up and running as quickly as possible.”

The prime minister said it was obviously going to be a big clean-up job. “The loss of life underscores the sheer scale of this weather event and how quickly it can turn tragic.” Hipkins reminded Aucklanders to stay out of floodwaters, and off the beach, saying more rain was expected. “It’s safer to be inside than to go out at the moment,” he said.

Most supermarkets are open in the city – only four are closed. “Shop naturally, don’t panic buy,” Hipkins said.

Oakland Mayor Wayne Brown acknowledged how difficult last night was for many people and paid tribute to those who lost their lives. On emergency response, Brown again defended the speed with which the emergency was declared. “Everybody’s been out before and been out all night,” he said.

A review of communications and coordination of emergency services will be conducted. “There are a lot of lessons to be learned,” he said. “We’ll take our time to do that. But be absolutely sure, we’ll check everything out of this storm.”

The media – once again – was quick to inquire about the speed of the emergency response. Hipkins would not second guess what decisions were made, and Brown remained defensive of his decisions.

Asked why no emergency text message was sent to Aucklanders, a spokesperson for the event said the event was “beyond everything we’ve seen” and that the focus was on the safety of those at risk. There was a “crisis within a crisis” with emergency housing options being compromised by floodwaters.

Similar to his late-night press conference yesterday, Brown reiterated once again that he followed the “professionals’ lead” in making the decision to declare a state of emergency. “It’s not something you do lightly. I’ve followed the advice of those who do it regularly.”

Brown was asked why he chose not to “say” anything overnight – by avoiding social media and not holding a press conference until around midnight. Oakland Emergency Management Duty Superintendent Andrew Clark chose to answer this question even though the question was directed at Mayor Brown.

On the connections (or lack thereof) overnight, Hipkins added: “I’m OK with people having questions… There will be a good time to go over these things. The moment I want to [the mayor and emergency management] Focus on responding. Undoubtedly, when reviewing this, there will be lessons to learn from the experience.”

Continuing to be defensive, Brown said there was no sense in communicating things that were “just your point.” This came after a question referring to Councilman Joe Bartley, who called for the declaration of a state of emergency earlier. “You have to report the facts,” Brown said.
