NIU University’s STEM online café explores the relationship between tremor and fracture

DeKalb – We do not usually consider the US Central as an earthquake zone. However, at least 26 minor earthquakes have rocked northern Illinois in the past 100 years, and in recent years Oklahoma has seen “tangible” (3 or higher) earthquakes from California.

The next day online at the University of Northern Illinois, STEM Caf, join geology professors NIU Philip Carpenter and Megan Brown for a Earth-shaking discussion about seismic activity in northern Illinois and the central United States. Carpenter, a registered Illinois seismologist and geologist, will discuss the history of the Illinois earthquake. He says the public may be surprised to learn that we have earthquakes in this part of the country, but what is most surprising is the fact that we know relatively little about the errors that cause these earthquakes.

Brown, a hydrologist, will discuss “induced earthquakes” – earthquakes caused by human activities such as mining or fluid injection into underground formations, which have received national attention since the oil and gas boom in the late 2000s.
