Iran earthquake: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale has struck northwest Iran, killing at least seven and injuring 440 people so far. According to the official news agency (IRNA), the earthquake occurred in the city of Khoy, near the Iranian-Turkish border, on Saturday at 9:44 pm (local time).

The tremors were reportedly very strong and were felt by people in many areas of West Azerbaijan Province in Iran. It was also felt in many cities, including Tabriz, the regional capital of neighboring East Azerbaijan.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the quake occurred at 23:44:44 (UTC+05:30) and struck 14 km south-southwest of Khoye at a depth of 10 km.

On the other hand, a powerful explosion also occurred at a military factory in the city of Isfahan, central Iran. Citing the Iranian Ministry of Defense, Iranian media claimed that the drone attack was a “failure”.

Is Iran vulnerable to earthquakes?

Earlier in July 2022, at least five people died and 44 others were injured in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in southern Iran. It was reported that the epicenter of the quake was near the village of Sayeh Khosh, which is home to about 300 people in Hormozgan province, about 1,000 kilometers south of the capital, Tehran. The report said that many neighboring countries felt the quake.

It should be noted here that Iran is located on large seismic faults and experiences an average of one earthquake per day. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
