A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Shaia, Xinjiang, with no injuries reported so far

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Xia County, Aksu County, in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, at 7:49 a.m. Monday and had its epicenter at a depth of 50 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Some residents in Aksu and neighboring counties, reached by Global Times on Monday, said they were awakened by strong tremors. Videos uploaded online by some locals showed ceiling lights shaking during the event.

According to information from the local fire brigade, a 10-man team has been deployed to the epicenter area with 1,500 firefighters and 36 dogs on standby.

As of press time, the advance team has reached Kasikan village – the closest village to the epicenter and has begun search and rescue efforts.

The epicenter is located 41 kilometers from the Tarim Basin, and there are no villages or population centers within 20 kilometers of the epicenter. The Global Times learned from local authorities in Aksu that there have been no reports of injuries or house collapses so far.

According to data from the Aksu authorities, over the course of five years, there were 218 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 within 200 km of the epicenter and Monday was the highest reading so far.

The communications network, power supply, and transportation in Shaya Governorate continue to operate normally. The Xinjiang regional government launched a level three emergency response to the earthquake and sent people from the transportation, communications and public health departments to the epicenter.

Railway departments in places that could feel the quake have arranged thorough inspections of bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure, adding that some damaged trains have returned to service.
