An earthquake strikes near Livingstone

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Livingston on Monday, January 30, 2023 according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS reported that the quake struck approximately 5.5 miles northwest of Livingston at 12:28 p.m.

There are no reports of damage or injuries yet. The quake was reported to have been at a depth of just over 3 miles (5 km).

People reported feeling the 5.8-magnitude quake across Montana and the Northwest, with some reports coming from as far away as Vancouver and Lethbridge, Canada. It caused some minor damage, but no fatalities or serious injuries.

The plains of central and eastern Montana are less prone to earthquakes, but few significant earthquakes have been reported.

According to the USGS, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Montana on May 15, 1909. Several smaller earthquakes have been recorded in Roosevelt County, including a 4.5-magnitude earthquake in Freud Township that did some damage to a grain bin back in 1943.
