Magnitude 4.9 earthquake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale rocked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Andaman Sea on Tuesday. There have been no reports of damages or losses so far.

The National Center of Seismology (NCS) tweeted that the quake occurred around 12:15 a.m. NCS said it was 77 km deep.

The epicenter was at 12.60 latitude and 93.42 longitude.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 99 km northeast of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Earlier on January 24, parts of Delhi and the NCR reported that strong tremors were felt lasting at least 15 seconds as people rushed outside their homes and offices. The epicenter of that quake was Nepal, according to the NCS.

Yesterday a 4.2 magnitude earthquake hit Kutch district of Gujarat state. The area authorities said that there were no reports of loss of life or damage to property.

In July 2022, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded 22 massive earthquakes in 24 hours with magnitudes ranging from 3.8 to 5.0.
