Utah community health concern of COVID Surge

The Utah medical community calls on state officials to authorize the wearing of face masks in public places. At a press conference on Friday, representatives of the state’s largest health care system said they were concerned about recent increases in the number of coronavirus cases, and they feared that government hospitals – currently with a capacity of 72% – may be overlooked soon. Gary Herbert State Governor announced on Thursday that masks will be required in schools this fall, but he has not reached the state-level statewide. Health care officials say this is not enough to slow the spread of the virus and threatens the state’s ability to put the economy back on the right track. Read the full story. John Reid

Salt Lake City Council holds the first AMA on police budget

Salt Lake City Hall held what they said was the first meeting they would ever ask me about on Friday. They addressed lingering concerns about the police budget. Council chair Chris Wharton said the full budget has already been approved, but they hope to work with the mayor’s office to use community comments to broaden their process to tackle racism and overall inequality. The council voted last month to cut about 6% of police funding. Funds for police jobs will likely be earmarked for things like additional training and body cameras, but the money will be controlled through a non-manager account. – Jessica Lowell

Sim Gill comments on Salt Lake City protests

Sim Gill, Salt Lake District Attorney, condemned the vandalism of his office building during protests Thursday night over the killing of Bernardo Palacios Carbajal police. Jill announced Thursday morning that he had acquitted the two officers involved. In a statement issued on Friday, Jill described the damage to his office building as “an illegal and irresponsible disregard for civil dialogue and community cooperation.” The protesters painted the street in front of the building in red, with hanging posters and red stained paint on the doors and windows. Salt Lake police said some windows were also broken. Gill said he would continue to work to gain the trust of local communities, and he hoped that sabotage would not obscure this work. Sonia Hutson

The Eighth Elite was chosen: the Salt Lake City finalists

Eight designs were chosen for the new Salt Lake City flagship. From Friday, residents can decide which one to prefer. Some flags are simpler to design, such as the flags with the white and blue horizontal stripes representing the Great Salt Lake and the snowy mountains. Others are more sophisticated, including one showing three mountains under a red sky, with a four pointed star in each one, above a horizontal blue stripe. In front of the public until August 21 to focus on designs and a new flag is scheduled for September 16. – Ross Terrell

President Donald Trump agreed to declare a major disaster for the Utah earthquake on March 18. The announcement allows federal funding for state and local governments, as well as for people affected by the earthquake in Salt Lake and Davis provinces. Individuals can get the money to cover home repairs, temporary housing, or any damaged property that is not covered by insurance. Small businesses are also eligible for loans up to $ 2 million. State and local governments can get up to 75% of the cost of responding to the earthquake paid by the federal government. Sonia Hutson

Rob Bishop is trying to slow the passage of the great American open air law

Republican Congressman Rob Bishop has temporarily banned the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, which will guarantee full annual funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The bill was to be voted on in the House of Representatives before July 4, but the bishop raised concerns about a mysterious clause that was excluded from the legislation, which halted the vote. However, the bill is likely to be passed because it has already passed the Senate. Read the full story. – Kate Groetzinger, Bluff
