A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits the southern Philippines

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines (Update 2, 8:22 p.m.) — A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Wednesday, the US Geological Service said, with local authorities warning of potential aftershocks and damage.

The earthquake occurred at 6:44 pm near the municipality of Moncayo in Davao de Oro province.

There were no immediate reports of major damage in the remote and mountainous gold mining region.

Moncayo Police Sergeant Harvey Assayas told AFP the quake was strong at first but gradually weakened and stopped after 40 seconds.

“The authorities are now patrolling around the place to assess the damage, including firefighters and disaster officers,” Assayas said.

Corporal police. Lusita Ambrosio, who is based in the nearby municipality of New Bataan, described the quake as “rapid”.

“After 10 minutes, our colleagues returned to the building,” said Ambrosio, who walked out with her colleagues when the police station started shaking.

“I checked the building and saw a small crack in the barracks.”

But in the nearby municipality of Montevista, Maricar Melgar said the quake was so strong that she feared the building she was in would collapse.

“This was probably the strongest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. My body is still shaking,” the 51-year-old told AFP.

In Tagum City, Davao del Norte Province, 40 kilometers southwest of the epicenter, residents also fled their homes and electricity was cut off due to the force of the quake.

“We were eating when (the house) started shaking – it was strong,” said Grace Gao, 40.

“We ran outside – we had to take safety precautions. We didn’t see any damage inside the house when we got back.”

Earthquakes occur on a daily basis in the Philippines which lies along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, an arc of seismic as well as volcanic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.

Most of them are too weak for humans to feel, but the powerful and destructive ones come randomly with no technology available to predict when and where this will happen.

The country’s Civil Defense Bureau regularly conducts exercises that simulate earthquake scenarios along active fault lines.

The last major event in October was in the northern Philippines.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck the mountain town of Dolores in Apra County, injuring several people, damaging buildings and cutting power to most of the area.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the mountainous Abra region last July triggered landslides and fissures, killing 11 people and injuring several hundred.
