Mizoram seeks to help the center as a series of earthquakes hit the country

On Friday, the Mizoram government asked the center to provide assistance and send seismologists or geological physicists to the country to study and evaluate the ground situation after a series of earthquakes that struck several parts of the state.

In a letter addressed to Minister of Mines Bralhad Joshi, Prime Minister Zuramathanga said that the Chambhai region in the eastern part of the state had been affected by seismic activities ranging from 4.2 to 5.5 since June 21, and the region was rocked after aftershocks on more than 50 occasions.

He said that the tremors caused damage to many homes, community halls and religious places.

“In this regard, I ask you to kindly provide assistance to this country, and seismologists or geologists may be sent from the Geological Survey of India to Mizoram to study and assess the ground situation as soon as possible,” Zoramthanga said in his letter.

He also asked the Minister of Trade Unions to accelerate the study to determine the feasibility of installing more seismic centers in the eastern part of Mizoram with seismic measurement in real time for disaster preparedness.

He urged that the geological division of the area covering Mizoram be made through the geological survey of India in the upcoming field seasons, starting from the Chambae region.

The Prime Minister said that a series of earthquakes added to the psychological pressure on people at a time when the country was suffering from the crisis of COVID-19.

He said people are setting up temporary tents outside their homes where they spend their nights because they are afraid to stay in their homes.

According to Zoramthanga, the detailed extent of earthquake damage is assessed by state geology, mineral resources, trade and industry departments with the help of geologists from GSI and Mizoram State Unit and a detailed report that has not yet been completed.

Up to eight earthquakes have rocked Mizoram since June 18, as the Shambhai district bordering Myanmar was hardest hit.

The deputy commissioner of the Shanghai region, Maria CT Zawali, said that at least 158 ​​homes, including church buildings and community halls, were damaged in the earthquakes.

According to officials, the earthquakes also hit neighboring areas such as Saitwal, Seha and Serchep.

The last earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 struck the state on Thursday in Champhai and Cerchip regions.
