Magnitude 4.3 earthquake hits Sikkim district

An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale jolted the town of Yuksom in Sikkim early Monday morning, the National Center of Seismology reported. The quake occurred at around 4:15 a.m. at a depth of 10 km, 70 km northwest of Yuksom.

“Magnitude earthquake: 4.3, occurred on 13-02-2023, 04:15:04 IST, Latitude: 27.81 and Long: 87.71, Depth: 10km, Location: 70km NW of Yuxom, Sikkim, India,” NCS Science in a tweet.

An official bulletin said a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit earlier Sunday the central part of Assam state. It added that there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property.

The quake was recorded at 4:18 p.m., with the epicenter located in Nagon district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, the National Center of Seismology said in a report.

She added that the depth of the earthquake reached 10 kilometers.

The epicenter was about 160 km east of Guwahati near Hogai in central Assam.

The earthquake was also felt by people in western Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Gulaghat and Morigaon districts along with those in Sontpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River.

The northeastern states are in the highly seismic zone, and the region is frequently hit by earthquakes. Meanwhile, rescuers pulled more survivors from the rubble on Sunday, nearly a week after one of the worst earthquakes to hit Turkey and Syria, as Turkish authorities sought to maintain order across the disaster area and launched legal action over building collapses.

As the chances of finding more survivors grow, the tally from Monday’s earthquake and major aftershocks in both countries has risen to more than 33,000 and looks set to continue to grow. It was the deadliest earthquake in Turkey since 1939.
