The United Nations says the earthquake rescue phase is “coming to a close”, with the death toll exceeding 35,000

The rescue phase from the Turkey-Syria earthquake is “coming to a close,” said Martin Griffiths, the UN Humanitarian Aid Coordinator, during a visit to Aleppo in northern Syria on Monday, with the urgent turn now to providing shelter, food, education and psychosocial care. The combined death toll exceeds 35,000. Follow FRANCE 24 for live updates. All times are in Paris time (GMT+1).

10:20 a.m.: The death toll rises to more than 35,000 in the Turkey-Syria earthquake

The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has risen to more than 35,000, as search and rescue teams begin to finish their work.

Local officials and medics said 31,643 people died in Turkey and 3,581 in Syria from last Monday’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake, bringing the confirmed total to 35,224.

9:56 a.m.: The UN chief says the earthquake rescue phase is “nearly over.”

Griffiths added, “What’s most striking here, is even in Aleppo, which has suffered so much over these many years, this moment, that moment…it was the worst that these people have gone through.”

The UN official also said the UN would get aid to move from government-held areas of Syria to the rebel-held northwest of the country – which was also devastated by the deadly earthquake.

8:28 a.m.: The death toll in Syria has passed 4,300, according to the United Nations

More than 4,300 people have been killed and more than 7,600 injured in northwest Syria as of February 12, following the deadly earthquake and aftershocks in neighboring Turkey, the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement on Monday.

Rescue workers in Syria’s opposition-held northwest revealed a decrease in casualties as of Friday, and they expect to announce a higher death toll in the coming hours.

7:55 am: A woman is pulled from the rubble a week after the quake

Local media reported that rescuers pulled a woman alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Turkey, on Monday, a week after the earthquake struck southern Turkey and northwestern Syria.

The report stated that Sibel Kaya, 40, was rescued in the southern province of Gaziantep, about 170 hours after the first of the two earthquakes in the region. Rescue workers in Kahramanmaras also made contact with three survivors, believed to be a mother, daughter and child, in the rubble of a building.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said that yesterday, Sunday, Russian, Kyrgyzstan and Belarusian rescue teams pulled a man alive from a collapsed building in Turkey, about 160 hours after the earthquake.

3:25 a.m.: The United States urges Syria, all sides to allow earthquake aid to reach those in need

On Sunday, the US government called on Syria and all parties to immediately grant humanitarian access to all those in need across the country after devastating earthquakes that killed at least 33,000 people.

A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said: “All humanitarian aid must be allowed to pass through all border crossings, and aid must be allowed to be distributed to all affected areas without delay.”

Washington called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to grant immediate access to humanitarian aid to all those in need, without exception, and urged him to pursue a blanket mandate for humanitarian aid delivery.

A United Nations spokesman said on Sunday that earthquake aid from government-held parts of Syria to opposition-held territory had been held up by “approval issues” with one militant group. The issue poses an additional challenge to aid workers trying to reach the northern regions affected by the earthquakes.

Of the 3,500 deaths reported so far in Syria, the bulk have occurred in the northwest, in an area largely controlled by the Islamist group Tahrir al-Sham, which the United States considers a terrorist organization.

2:30 a.m.: Turkey investigates contractors after quake death toll passes 33,000

Turkish authorities are targeting contractors allegedly linked to buildings that collapsed in last week’s powerful earthquakes as focus turns to blame.

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said 131 people were under investigation for their alleged responsibility in constructing buildings that failed to withstand earthquakes. While the earthquakes were strong, many in Turkey blamed faulty construction for compounding the devastation.

Turkey’s building codes comply with current earthquake engineering standards, at least on paper, but they are rarely enforced, which explains why thousands of buildings have fallen or smashed onto the people inside.
